Theory still disputed

Recent investigation into the town records of Bizenghast (a small mill city outside of Watertown) has left historians stymied, as a large number of death certificates officiated in the town between 1701 and 1950 do not match up to any of the plots in the residential graveyard.

This apparent lack of bodies to match the certificates was for a long time only the concern of local genealogists. Recently however...Visitors from nearby suburbs have begun to take long hiking trips through the woods of Bizenghast on a quest to find what has now become known as Bizenghast's Graveyard, an alleged second cemetery that historians claim must exist, in order to contain the missing bodies. To add to the confusion, many visitors to the antiquated town claim to have found the graveyard in the woods, only to mysteriously lose it again."

A small group of residents of the town Bizenghast, go out to explore the woods one day. Though they'd been here many times before, they found themselves unexplainably lost. Trying to find their way out of the eerie forest, they come upon what could only be described as a pile of junk. Old things like antique jewelry hanging from the treetops, picture frames, mirrors, even a broken down carriage. Though it wasn't there when they first arrived, and it seemed near impossible that someone could have done this in such a short time period. Their curiousity leads them into the pile, searching through in awe at all the old junk. Past the pile, one of the group sees something. Moving in for a closer look, the small group see a large opening. Containing what could be no other than the 'second graveyard' some lunatic locals had been buzzing about. Going in to check it out, the group enters a sunken mausoleum through a passage just rising above the ground that leads them down a stairway. Inside they find a large plaque that read:

In stone towers four,
Hooded watcher at the door,
And in alcoves threescore,
Let us be.

Behind glass walls we wait,
On our deeds meditate,
Until some luck or fate,
Sets us free.

May you never try to find,
What is hidden behind,
But if you're still of that mind,
Look and see.

To know what lies untold,
In chambers grown cold,
Let each riddle unfold,
To find each key.

Thinking it was just for show, and on a dare, they all press the key shaped button at the bottom of the plaque, spilling into a giggling mess when it resulted in a mere click, and nothing other. But just as they were about to leave, a decorative area of one of the walls opened up, revealing a contract sealed behind unbreakable glass. It reads:

"Having entered the sunken mausoleum and activated this contract,
the undersigned does hereby agree to be owned body and soul. Until such time as this mausoleum's vaults are emptied of captive spirits. Or by the
undersigned's death, whichever comes first."

And beneath this, each of the group's full names is signed in their own handwriting. Freaked out and tired at this point, the group tries to convince themselves it's a trick by one of their other friends. But what happened next, finally forced them to realize it wasn't just a silly game. They had trespassed, signed the contract by pressing the key, and now they were soulbound to the Mausoleum until a certain amount of spirits were freed from vaults. Bali-Lali, a strange creature, came down from a passage in the ceiling, telling the group to return the next night, bringing any gold item to place at the door as a means of getting in, or they would all die. Leaving them confused with such a brief, hardly-considerable-to-be-explanation, Bali-Lali disappeared into the ceiling once again. And now it's the next night, the individuals sneak from their homes in fear of the creature's threat, and meet back at the entrance of the graveyard. Tonight. Tonight, stressed, scared, and tired as they may be. Tonight they would be given an explanation. It wouldn't be what they wanted to hear...

Personality: Alice isn't fearless, but she's strong. She may get scared sometimes, but when driven to the edge, she can get pretty fierce. Alice likes to figure things out, and she can be a little impatient sometimes. She's loyal, trustworthy, but she has a quick temper when low on sleep. Alice has a curiousity that will surely one day be the end of her, but when she must know something, she must know it. Alice tends to let her emotions blind her, and sometimes can't see the truth behind them. But all in all, she's a good person.

History(Optional): Alice's parents both died in a fire when she was six, leaving her to live with her grandmother in Bizenghast. She's known to have flashbacks triggered by open flame, and the like. It's normal for the trauma she went through, but her grandmother still considers sending her off to a hospital in Watertown for the rest of her life. Of course Alice just believes she wants to get rid of her. Her grandmother had never liked her father, and had never liked her. And blamed them both for the accidental death of Alice's mother. Alice spends most of her time in her room, considering her grandmother refuses to allow her to attend school like a normal child, being homeschooled instead. Her friends are her escape from this miserable world, there's no telling how dealing with the Mausoleum could turn out for her.

Personality: Nate is a laidback guy. He likes to just go with the flow, and let things be. He’s open-minded, and accepting. He gets bored kind of easily, but he’s pretty patient. Nate is actually kind of lazy, and likes doing things the easy way. Even though he likes things to be comfortable, he enjoys trying out new things.

History(Optional): Nate’s life was pretty ordinary. Parents, little sister, school, video games, friends, movies, blah blah blah. One might want something more, but Nate was comfortable, and liked it. He didn’t mind a minor change now and then, but life was life. Sometimes it was a pain and sucked. Other times it was awesome and totally rocked. Things flowed pretty smoothly, until he and his friends got stuck in a Mausoleum for possibly eternity!...or when they died. Whichever came first.
Other: Because of his laziness, his parents tried to find him a hobby. They tried many things; some worked, some didn't, but to Nate is was all just another experience. His latest hobby that his parents tried is fencing, and Nate seems to enjoy this quite a bit, despite still being lazy about it.

Personality: Collin is painfully shy. It's difficult for him to talk to others unless he knows. When at ease, he still has a bit of a stuttering problem. Collin enjoys exploring and, while he might not be particularly strong, he is incredibly fast and flexible and that makes his exploring a bit easier. Collin has a problem saying 'no' because he doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, though he does manage to say it on certain occasions. He doesn't get mad easily, nor is he a big crier

It can get fairly awkward for Collin when he's around his father- who grew up in Bizenghast, but moved away to play linebacker on a college- and later pro- football team. The two have nothing in common but Collin appreciates it when his dad at least tries to talk to him. He became friends with Alice one night, a few years ago, when he was exploring and came across her house. He befriended Nate and the others soon after.

Some people would call him rude and condescending, which if you cross one of his standard personal lines he will be. Blair is also a very curious person and he loves learning new facts and studying people's theories. Blair also zones out on occasion, getting lost in his thoughts or even just shutting down as well. He enjoys annoying and weirding out people who aren't his friends, and he allows rumors about himself to grow so people will avoid him. Blair is also slightly paranoid about things and hate's the idea of being boxed in.

He has always suffered from hallucinations and even panic attacks as well since he was four years old. Unfortunately his parents stopped buying him medication early on because they decided it cost them too much money. When he was eight he went swimming with his cousins, but eventually they left Blair alone in the river to go eat. That was his first bad hallucination where he saw a masked man come out of the woods, heading for him. Blair had a panic attack and tried to run away, and as he screamed in terror he tripped over a rock and fell underneath the water. Luckily his cousins came and helped him out of the river and he didn't have any major problems.

Ever since that experience Blair hasn't been swimming again and has been afraid of water. It became known at Bizenghast's small school that Blair frequently had hallucinations and since he was already considered one of the smartest kids in class he was teased about one day becoming a crazy scientist or what not. Instead of trying to end these harsh rumors and insults he embraced them and tried to act strange so maybe people would eventually just avoid him. They did and he enjoyed the quietness for a while, but then he eventually began to feel lonely and thus he looked for friends and eventually began studying Alice, Rhian, and Nate for their individual qualities that Blair thought were good things for a friend to have. He eventually befriended all three by the time he was fourteen and got to know their other friends as well. Blair's deepest fear is that he'll be stuck in Bizenghast forever, and he's not sure if the Mausoleum will be his prison or his escape.

Edrear used to think very little of Humans and hold even lower regard to their capablities, but since a certain Agent passed over the years he's grown to show them more respect.

Personality: Edaniel's senseless and wicked. Tricky, and truly the strangest being you'll ever meet. Sometimes it's hard to tell if he's joking or if he's genuinely insane. If there's one thing Edaniel gets told the most it's that he has slight resemblance to the Cheshire Cat. He isn't particularly fond of him either. To him, Cheshire's got the one trick and he milks it on Entertainment Tonight every six months. And don't even start with Edaniel about those wicked stripey highlights in his fur. He's actually hoping that's not actually a hairstyle Cheshire paid money for. Like, he's hoping maybe vandals broke into his house at night and did that TO him. But in any case, before you have a conversation with Edaniel, you should know that you won't be on the same subject for too long, and you need to keep up because half the things he says doesn't even make sense anyways.

History(Optional): Edaniel didn't always have green fur in his SKOMP (Some Kind Of Pointy Monster) form. No, he's not a cat. He even belongs to the national register of SKOPMs. But anyways, he's a natural blonde. However, several years ago he was involved in a fight to the death with the Maraso County, CA Chief of Police's front lawn, and had maintained permanent grass stains ever since. One time he was put inside a Lost and Found locker at the Mall of America for looking too much like somebody's Build-a-Bear purchase, but since he didn't have a receipt attached they eventually had to let him go. He pretty much got the tower guard job by filling out applications. He was just sitting around on his couch one day watching reruns and he figured he had to do something for a living, so Edaniel went down to the place and they gave him a form to fill out and said they'd call in a few weeks. Couple days later he got interviewed and BAM, the job was his. He wasn't going to take it at first cause they didn't offer health benefits but when they pointed out that he was dead and didn't need them, Edaniel cut them some slack and signed on. Simple as that. Edaniel's also been involved with half the friggin world, "romantic wise." Oreos are the only foodstuff that change his color. He thinks it's that mysterious filling in the center. However there are some other strange reactions Edaniel has to food. His sister put him strictly off-limits to hazelnuts after she caught him impersonating a fishstick one too many times. He also tries to avoid ricecakes in general, as they leave him with a vicious case of bad hair day for at least a week. He actually travels a lot, unlike his brother, who's never even SEEN the outside human world. He usually floats around pretending to be a stuffed animal, so he sees a lot of malls and toy stores. One time an eight year old girl named Brittany tried to stuff him full of polyfill at a Build-A-Bear workshop.

Alice pulled the dark jacket closer around herself, looking around the fogged graveyard at all the mossed over, incredibly sculptured statues surrounding her. And she suddenly wished that one: she wasn't so damned early, and two: they had decided to meet up outside the forest. But that wasn't the case. They were to meet at the doorway they had originally opened, and forever changed their formally normal (for the most part) lives. And now she had showed early, and found herself walking through the eerie graveyard at 9, with the cloudy sky overhead. When she had snuck out of her house she hadn't brought a flashlight because it was a full moon and a perfectly clear night. But the moment she entered the clearing clouds had come and taken away her only light. Leaving the shivering teen in the creepy old place shrouded in a darkness that never seemed to bother her before.

Alice glanced over her shoulder, slightly paranoid, before she took a seat next to the door. Which opened into a stairway that led into the sunken old mausoleum. The statue on it was of a hooded person holding out a platter. And considering the doors were bolted tonight unlike the night before, the blonde figured that was what the gold was for. She pulled out the bracelet from her pocket, deciding she'd wait for everyone else. Tonight I'll know just what exactly is going on here... She thought to herself, though the teen wasn't entirely sure she was ready for whatever answer she would recieve. And shuddered at the thought of Bali-Lali being the one to explain it to them. Seeing that horrid creature once was enough for her.

Blair continued to walk through the quiet and dark forest as he made his way to the old graveyard where he would meet his friends. He was beginning to regret his decision to walk through the forest in a short sleeved t-shirt now that the cold was biting at his skin. The thick cluster of trees that Blair was currently walking through seemed especially creepy as they were illuminated by the light of his flashlight, which of course left everything that the beam didn't touch in dark shadows. This odd effect helped the boy use his imagination to guess what might be watching him from the shadows, this certainly didn't make the boy feel safe at all of course. He was sure that Bali-Lali had sent creatures to follow him at this point, possibly kill him as well for all Blair knew. And so he began to quicken his pace as he walked briskly and loudly through the forest.

Blair clicked off his flashlight as he realized he was nearing the graveyard and that he was more likely to lose whoever was following him this way. His breath began to grow heavy as paranoia pulsed through his body like a sick poison, controlling his body and commanding it to run as reason was shunned away temporarily. But all of it ended when Blair tripped and fell flat onto the ground, ending his escape from the creature he had imagined was chasing him.

Perfect, just be glad that you came alone so no one had to see you pull that. He chided himself before looking up and seeing that the trees were thinning out ahead of him. The boy made no effort to wipe the dirt off of his face as he stood up and then walked out of the forest and into the dark and damp looking graveyard. The paranoid boy was sure that he saw someone standing at the other end of the graveyard and so he reluctantly turned his flashlight back on and shined it towards the entrance of the Mausoleum. "And of course you arrive before everyone else." Blair said playfully as he saw Alice, relief washing over him for now.

Alice heard a sound in the forest ahead of her, and scooted farther back. The tip she felt against her back sent a quick shiver up her spine, and she had to hold back the scream that had built with it as she turned and realized it was just another creepily detailed statue. She sighed, turning back just in time to look directly into the overpowering beam of the flashlight that had suddenly cut through the distance of it's location and herself, and Alice started like a deer in the headlights before hearing Blair's familiar voice and calming down.

"God...Blair don't do that to me." She sighed, feeling her heart settle back in her chest, and moving her sleeved arms up in front of her eyes to block the too-bright ray of the flashlight.

Blair angled the flashlight down so it simply illuminated the area around them instead of blinding Alice. "Sorry." He apologized before biting his lip for a second. He still felt nervous in the graveyard, especially now that his light was causing the creepy shadow effect all around him again. It was oddly cold and quiet in the graveyard. There were no animals or stars that could be seen, no breeze to explain the temperature drop that occurred when one entered the area.

"So I'm guessing no one else has arrived yet?" Blair asked Alice as he tried to stop feeling so uneasy, which was a hard task when one considered his surroundings.

Alice blinked her eyes for a moment as he lowered the beam, and her dark violet eyes attempted to readjust to the consuming darkness once again. At his question, Alice shook her head no. And suddenly remembering Bali-Lali's warning, a somewhat worried expression crossed her features. "I hope they show..." She said quietly, not liking the idea of any one of her friends trying to test that spider thing's threat. They were all she had in this world, and she was already gonna get it if her Grandmother found out she'd snuck out. There's no telling what that old bat would do. She might not even have a world anymore if the old woman sent her off to a Watertown hospital like she threatened so many times a day.

Finally regaining her vision as well as an average Human could in a darkness such as this, she leaned forward from where she sat trying to see his face from where he stood. Curiousity struck her as she realized what it was she was seeing. "Blair...Why do you have dirt on your face?" She asked, then despite the sick and eerie feelings the place was giving off, the blonde laughed quietly. "I understand you had to sneak out, but this isn't war." Alice teased lightly, though she didn't really believe the boy had intentionally smeared dirt across his face.

Collin ran through the trees, ducking under branches and leaping over logs, shining his flashlight ahead. This was one of the few times he actually cursed his father's desire for them to get close. His father had cornered him as he was leaving for the Mausoleum and spent half an hour trying to convince him to listen and then explain the workings of football to him. It had only taken five for him to make Collin want to bang his head against the wall. Despite that the Bali-Lali creature had freaked him out pretty badly the other night, the explorer in him desperately wanted to look through the mausoleum.

He spotted a light ahead and really hoped it meant that one of his friends had arrived. He slowed down to a walking speed, shining his light ahead. Collin grinned when he saw it was Alice and Blair and ran up to meet them. "H-Hey, guys!"

Blair bit his lip and rubbed the back of his neck nervously as he heard Alice's question. "Well you see the thing is I tripped..." He tried to explained before he let the sentence fade off as Collin ran up to them, shinin his flashlight into Blair's eyes. The boy shut his eyes for a second until he knew that he could open his eyes without being blinded. "Hello Collin." Blair replied in a slightly strained tone as he blinked for a second.

The young boy's gaze left Collin and went back to Alice as though nothing had happened. "Anyways like I said I tripped and fell face first into the dirt because I wasn't paying attention." He explained in a tone that implied there was more, but Blair didn't mention that he had panicked on his way to the Mausoleum.

Alice looked up as Collin approached, suddenly feeling uncomfortable on the ground as everyone around her was standing. The teen got to her feet, placing one hand on the cold statue to help steady herself as she came to find her legs had fallen asleep. "Collin, thank God." She said, tone relieved. Her mind had begun to wander down the path of no one showing, but with the two of them already here she felt more comfortable that the rest would arrive soon.

She turned back to Blair. "I see." She said, grinning. She took her knee-length jacket off, and threw it in his direction, "Here, use this for your face." Alice offered.

"Thanks." Blair replied as he reached out to catch the jacket, only to fumble a bit and drop his flashlight. Instead of retrieving his light Blair simply wiped the dirts off of his hands and then face before throwing the jacket back to Alice.

He still let his flashlight lay on the ground as Blair felt that moving it was unnecessary at this point. "You don't think it's going to rain, do you?" Blair asked as he looked up at the clouded sky above them, his voice giving away the fear he felt at the idea that they would have to wait out here in not only the dark, but a storm as well.

Rhian walked through the forest, one arm wrapped around her, her free hand held a flashlight. She was nervous to be going back to the mausoleum, but instinct told her to toughen up and see what will happen. She continued forward, adrenaline rushing up her spine and arms.

Rgian thought she was getting near the mausoleum, since the clearing started getting wider. She also felt a some slight wind which sent a chill through her bare legs (she was wearing shorts). Rhian glanced up at the sky and saw the full moon covered by thick clouds. I better be getting close to the mausoleum, otherwise, i'm gonna get drenched if it rains.

Rhian started to come upon grave stones and knew she must have arrived to the graveyard. She made her way through the cemetery, muttering to the gravestones if ever she accidently stepped on someones grave. Rhian heard voices and frantically swept her flashlight through the graveyard. "Who's there?" Rhian rushed forward, her heart thumping, and was relieved when she realized it was just Alice, Blair, and Collin.

"Uh..hey guys," Rhian said awkwardly," Hope i didn't startle anyone." Rhian thought it was dumb to say.Just be glad that I made it here in one piece. Rhian thought to herself as she removed her hat, brushed her fingers through her blonde hair, and breathed a sigh of relief.

Alice caught the jacket as Blair threw it back, letting it drap over one arm. It was chilly out, but she didn't let it bother her. There were much greater things to worry about. "No problem." She replied, still glancing around the graveyard nervously at sounds she heard in the distance. She found his question as a way to distract herself, and she looked up at the clouded sky overhead for the first time since getting here.

The clouds were thick enough to block out the mystical glow of the night's full moon, but they weren't heavy like storm clouds. They didn't appear to have that pulsing effect like with with rain, or snow, or anything of the like. In fact, the clouds appeared to have more of a smokey, (and she hated to admit it)...ghostly air to them. The words floated through her mind against her will, causing a small shiver to snake down her spine, leaving her even more uncomfortable and paranoid than before.

"It looks that way at first glance, but I..." She trailed off as the sounds got closer, and peering in into the darkness, the teen caught a glimpse of blonde hair running towards them, "Rhian." She acknowledged quietly as she came closer. She told herself she needed to calm down, and not let her overactive imagination get to her. But then she thought of that horrid Bali-Lali and decided her imagination wasn't as crazed and overactive as she gave it credit for.

"Just a little." She said softly, giving a short-breathed laugh as her heart calmed. "I hope Nate didn't skip out, or fall asleep..." She said, looking out into the distance as she knew the boy's tendency to ignore his responsibilities.
