Halo: The Expendables Empty
PostSubject: Halo: The Expendables   Halo: The Expendables I_icon_minitimeTue Nov 02, 2010 12:34 pm

In the year of 2525, on October 7, a day that would live forever in UNSC history as the dawn of a brutal cycle of war, a UNSC battle-group arrived at the Human Colony World of Harvest in the Outer Colonies…the officers, crew, and soldiers of the battle group were stunned and horrified to find that the once lush world had been brutally destroyed… it's very surface burned and charred into glass, all forms of life, animal, plant, and human were no longer on scanners, it's biosphere wiped out, rendering the planet to lifelessness and unable to sustain life, and the cities in the colony were also reduced into nothing but rubble. They then detected a single ship of unknown but undeniably alien design hovering over the decimated world.

Before any form of communication was to be done to identify the unknown intruder, the single ship attacked the UNSC battle group, destroying all ships save for one badly damaged UNSC ship…intercepted communications from the now designated enemy ship identified it's affiliation with the Covenant, a caste driven, theological organization comprising of several alien races. And in it was a message in perfect English that would become the phrase that would truly show the danger the UNSC and Humanity faced.

"You're destruction is the will of the Gods…and we are their instrument."

With that…the UNSC-Covenant War began...

A war that would last for 27 years…

Out of all the 800 worlds colonized by the UNSC, over 260 of those worlds were invaded by the Covenant and those worlds were utterly obliterated, reduced into lifeless balls of glass by the orbital bombardments of the Covenant battle fleets, leaving only 540 worlds still in the rapidly declining grip of Humanity. The Covenant also proved successful in invading and devastating several Inner Colonies' worlds as well as smaller parts of the frontier, and even Eridanus II was destroyed…utterly reduced to glass, the other worlds that fell included Jericho VII, and all the Outer Colonies were completely obliterated. And the assaults on the Inner Colonies began.

It was Humanity's darkest days, outnumbered and out gunned, by the vast horde before them, and unable to match the higher levels of technology of the aliens before them, their fleets were decimated by the armadas of the Covenant Fleets, forcing UNSC Fleets to go closer to the Inner Colonies to protect them and to defend Earth. Only when the battles took place on the planetary surface that the UNSC had the upper hand, relying on their time honed tactics, strategy, luck, and fire power to even up the odds, and though they had gained several key victories…they suffered horrendous losses and were still losing ground.

Just three weeks prior to the fall of Reach, one of the most important UNSC colonial worlds, a team of five Spartans were sent out on a highly classified mission to locate and secure a Forerunner artifact that might be able to turn the tides of this war. This artifact is rumored to be on a UNSC Inner Colonial world, which has been reporting gravitational and slip space anomalies; what hasn't been said, is that the UNSC has lost contact with this colony...

Accepted, naturally. Glad to have you aboard.

A note to everyone else, you don't have to be absurdly specific with your armor like me, I'm just weird like that.

(Well, I hate to say it, but with the general lack of interest from the rest of the forum, we may as well go ahead and get started, maybe folks will pick up interest as we go along.)

Spriggs was polishing up her armor, trying to get the scratches and scorch marks off from the latest UNSC train-wreck, termed "Victory" by the brass. She didn't see it that way, as once again, more Spartan III's were wasted by the UNSC to do nothing more, than stall the Covenant. Once again...she was one of the few that managed to walk away...

So many lives...

It had to be for something, she knew Ackerson didn't give a damn about her, or her fellow Spartan III's...just about making himself look better then Dr. Halsey, which he was either doing right, or not quite bad enough to warrant a firing squad. Either way, it was a mess, but at least she got her chance to put a few insects under her boot-heel.

So, of course it didn't really surprise her when she was met with, what else, but another official order from the brass on a mission. The kicker? It was a top secret one; and only a handful would be accompanying her.

"Because the Lord knows it would be far too much of a waste of money to send the UNSC's expendable play-thing out on a mission with a whole squad of expendable play-things! Why, it'd be like throwing them at the Covenant! Couldn't do that!" Spriggs muttered to herself, partially out loud as she did her best mock-impression of a UNSC official.

Glass was sitting alone in his bunk, a tray holding his half-eaten meal sitting at the end of his bed. It wasn't the first time the Spartan had eaten alone, but it was the first time he had ever been given a reason to do so. He was going to be sent on a top secret mission, ordered by the top brass themselves to go. Finally he would be allowed to make some good use of his training. Whatever it was that he was being sent to do, that was.

So here he was, sitting on his bed, trying to get the taste of his meal out of his mouth, wondering what he would possibly have to do on his top-secret mission. Hopefully, it wasn't dying.

Spriggs sat up, hearing her back pop satisfyingly as she began to gently massage her lower back. Okay, so ONI wanted her to throw herself at whatever they thought was more important than throwing her, and even more Spartans into the meat-grinder. And better yet, they have her stacked with a group, that they refuse to disclose to her for matter of security...fantastic.

Sometimes it really made her wonder who they had sitting in the big chairs up in ONi intelligence...cause they didn't seem very 'intelligent' to her. Oh, well, it shouldn't be too much longer before they meet...hey, wait a minute...

"We don't have a time or place to meet!" shouted Spriggs as the realization hit her. She grabbed the rag she was using to clean her armor as best she could when she thought more on it, "Okay, so they didn't give me a time or place. Maybe the others have something to go on, or maybe a description of me...hell, I hope they didn't appoint me team leader!"

It was times like this she was thankful to be the only one in the armory...then she thought of the reason why she was alone, "By damn...if humanity weren't in such a spot...damn it..." and went back to her armor. Who knows...maybe she would run across someone.

"God this itches", Eron said as he turned off the shower. A long burned scar went across his chest and another down from his shoulder over to his back, a souvenir from his recent skirmish with a couple of Zealot-class Elites. He scratched at them while stepping out of the shower, searching for his towel. "Damn!" he had forgotten his towel. What was wrong with him? Ever since that battle he hadnt been right. He had nearly died to buy his team time to board the birds, only to have them all destroyed by a corvette. He sighed. "all for nothing," he mumbled. "Why even try?"

Finding a spare towel and drying himself off, he proceeded to get dressed and ready to meet that official. Some top secret mission going on and they though his sword skills were extraordinary. "Cant every Spartan fight of a couple of Elites?" he had told the Official over the comms. "maybe." he had said. "but not a couple of Zealot class Elites"

Fine If the UNSC wanted him they would have him.

"39." Bang! "40."

The range computer counted on as Feng aimed and fired at more moving targets in the firing range. He stopped when he reached somewhere a little bit after one hundered, and then checked his score. "Sharpshooter? That can't be right. I know that some of them I barely clipped. That won't be enough to stop anything in a real battle. I've got a mission coming up soon too, so I can't afford to miss a vital point."As the sniper reloaded his gun and prepared for another trial, his empty stomach growled furiously; he had been practicing most of the morning away with no rest.

"Can't stop now. Too many lives at stake," he stated, spotting his next target with his scope about sixty meters away. He pulled the trigger sending the bullet straight into the target's head.

Glass walked down the halls alone, headed for the armory. He wanted to check on the bombs that he had crafted a few days ago, wanting to tinker with them a bit so he could take them on the mission with him. That, along with the fact that Glass expected to meet other soldiers, hopefully soldiers who he would be working with, was another reason why he was headed down there at this time of day.

The Spartan wondered whether or not he would be working with a bunch of trigger-happy soldiers. They might as well shoot him now, if that was the case, Glass thought as he walked into the armory.

It was mostly empty, except for weapons of course. The cold steel walls and roofing tainted the room, making everything feel dead, cold, and very serious at the same time. It was fitting, Glass thought as his eyes rested on the one other person in the room. She looked frustrated, or at least enthralled by something; And Glass doubted that that something was polishing her armor.

Still, the Spartan wasn't sure whether or not to interrupt her. After all, she probably already knew he was there. And if she didn't, she likely didn't want to be interrupted at all.

"Well hey!" Spriggs called out without looking away from her armor; she leaned back, breathing deep before releasing it, "So, what brings you down into the Unspoken Memorial? Weapons testing, armor polishing, sparring?" she asked, looking over at the Spartan III.

"Say, you're one of the new batch, right? Name, rank and Service Tag, soldier." she said, tossing the rag aside as she looked more directly at him, unconsciously brushing the scar across the bridge of her nose. Looking at him now, she realized that he hadn't seen combat yet...he really was a fresh one.

(Being new, you're likely to be a Corporal.)

Glass fixed his posture in seconds, surprised to hear the other Spartan speak. He could tell that she was a higher rank then him just by the way she addressed him.

"Name is Glass, Rank is Corporal, Tag is O-167, Sir!" Glass replied as he looked straight ahead at the steel plated wall behind the other Spartan. After he was done giving his information, Glass glanced down at the other Spartan and let the serious demeanor wash away, smirking before he added, "And I'm just here to work on a few personal experiments I've been working on. A compact rifle, a personal weapon based on the MAC, and a few custom grenades that I've been working on. I found a way to get the grenade to explode in midair without having to hit a solid surface. Problem is I haven't gotten the timing issues down," He explained before rubbing the burns on his neck awkwardly. But Glass was enjoying the conversation, both amused and pleased with himself as he finally got to explain what he was doing to someone besides Major Jones. "I wouldn't want them all exploding before ... before they're used," Glass explained as he realized midsentence that he might not actually be talking to someone who was assigned to be on the same secret mission that he was. While he doubted another Spartan III would do anything to harm the mission, he still didn't want to get screwed over for being loose-lipped.

"So ... that's all," Glass declared as he tried to unsubtly change the subject.

Spriggs' eye twitched, something he wasn't telling her, "Corporal...are you being sent out on a mission?" Figured, just off the line and being fed to the wolves. ONI really had their head up their collective ass. "Look, soldier, don't change the subject. Tell me, what's this you're working on? Having trouble getting the timer fixed?"

She stood up, beginning to undress down to what was necessary before she strapped herself into her armor, it's slightly heavier weight easing up as the suit connected to her neural interface and came online. Tucking her helmet under her arm, she looked as Corporal Glass, "Alright, Corporal, lead the way. And don't blow yourself up."

She had a feeling...not sure what, but whatever it was, she tucked it away into the back of her mind.

Glass glanced around the area to make sure no one else was watching before he gave in on the urge to continue the conversation. So the Corporal walked over towards the (presumably) superior officer as she put her armor on. m

"Yes Sir, I am being sent on a mission. I was given the order a few hours ... well earlier today," Glass corrected himself as he noted just how much time he must have waited sitting around in his bunk. When he was given the order to lead the other Spartan to his project room, Glass merely nodded in reply and turned around as he walked towards the other side of the armory, where the weapons halls began. Glass left eye twitched as he heard the noise of the other soldier's armor hitting the floor, and he wondered why he hadn't put on his armor before coming out. What if they were attacked and he had not armor to protect himself with? What if he had just made an awful impression with a potential superior for being unprepared?! And even if that wasn't true, he could have at least looked cooler with his uniform, Glass silently lamented to himself.

On the other hand though ... he had finally found a Spartan who seemed interested in his work. That was something, he noted before deciding to answer the other Soldier's orders by starting at the beginning.

"Well, you know how all of the frag grenades the USNC has made only explode when they impact again the ground?" Glass explained excitedly as he glanced around to make sure that the other Spartan was listening. "Well, I figured that that's a pretty foolish thing to do. I mean, if they hit water, or plasma, or if they're caught in some sort of anti-gravity device, they wont react and thus they wont explode at all. The Covenant isn't completely stupid (I've heard), they could eventually or they might have already figured this out, so they might be working on something that could stop our grenades in mid-air and thus make them completely useless!" Glass stated loudly, using his hands for emphasis before stopping in place as he found the storage room where he kept his equipment. "So that's why I've been tinkering around with my own frags that can explode in air, water, on the ground, whenever. The problem is, I can't get the most important part just right yet," Glass explained as he unlocked and opened the door, walking into the cramped ten by six foot room. There was a bench that went along the entire way, covered in wires and pieces of weaponry.

Glass took on the seat before looking at the other Spartan with a grin before he said, "I've gotten the timer down so it doesn't go past thirty seconds any more. But the thing is, I've still had incidents where it explodes before the ten second mark when it's supposed to go boom. That's been a big issue in testing," Glass explained with a nervous chuckle as he motioned to the scars on his neck and upper torso. It was hilarious in hindsight, Glass had been informed, but the Corporal still loathed the fact that he had been scarred without ever having been in battle. Explaining that he had in fact never fought the Covenant and that the injuries were because of an accident was always an unpleasant experience, because Glass always received the same look after telling the truth.

"I thought about making a detonator to go along with the frags, but then I realized that people wouldn't be able to ever go out in a blaze of glory like that, and it would be really expensive to make detonators for every single grenade, so I'm just trying to work out the kinks of the internal clocks," Glass finished explaining as he looked back at ... the Soldier who hadn't told him her rank or name yet, Glass quickly realized as his brow furrowed and he contemplated the possibility that he may have just given this information to another Corporal who just happened to be very good at lying. That would suck.

Spriggs kept her face calm, all the while she couldn't believe what she was hearing; he was honestly the greenest soldier she had ever seen. He probably hadn't even seen a real fight, most of what he was saying seemed...hypothetical. "Corporal, your enthusiasm is...inspiring, but I have to ask you, on the level..." she said stepping up to him,"...how much combat experience do you have? Have you ever actually handled live explosives before?"

And what bugged her the most, was the first thing he said as she was dressing in the armory...but she'd circle back to that later, as she looked over at Glass' custom frags.

"I have worked with explosives before Sir. Just ... not in the field," Glass admitted as he picked up one of the grenades sitting behind him. "I haven't worked on testing out the timer with actual frags juts yet because ... well I would be by now if I had been using those from the start," The Corporal pointed out while chuckling nervously, mostly to himself as he decided the other Spartan probably wasn't very amused by his humor. "But frags should work fine with the same timer as the incendiary grenades I've been given to work with now, I've already talked with Colonel Mac about all this..." Glass reassured as he placed the grenade back quickly.

Glass resisted biting his lip as he went back to Spriggs actual question, something he wasn't sure he wanted to answer just yet. But he had to, it was an order .... from someone who's rank he did not know. He thought about forcing the other Spartan to give her rank and name, but quickly realized that since she was likely to be a superior officer, he'd likely only earn three extra seconds along with making the other Spartan angry. So Glass simply replied, "No Sir, I have never been in actual combat before," he whispered.

She nodded, taking in everything he said, "So no active combat, working with incendiary grenades...you surprise me, Corporal. You have no field experience or training, and are already making improvements to some of the weapons."

"I'm Spriggs, Warrant Officer grade 1 (otherwise W-1), Sierra 231."

She walked up to the soldier before her, looking him in the eye, "Now, if I remember correctly, you mentioned that you were going on a mission...could you explain that further?"
